When it comes to music, Karen Willems (1979) is an all-embracing soul. Best known as drummer/percussionist of Yuko and Zita Swoon Group. She has manned the skins for a myriad of talented artists: Mauro, Dirk Serries, Silver Junkie and Kaboom Karavan to name a few. With an eclectic resume of projects under her belt, Willems finally embarked on a more personal sonic journey in 2012: Inwolves.
Inwolves is quite the different animal, one bred from Willems's own artistic vision. Starting out as pet project in her attic, she captured alluring, otherworldly sounds inspired by Meetjesland, a countryside area between Ghent and Bruges renowned for its vast, dynamic landscape architecture of forests, polders, creeks and watercourses.
Ominous yet soothing, Inwolves doesn't draw much on traditional song structures, if at all. Instead, the subtle interweaving synth layers coincide towards a primal rhythmic surge. Wandering through a forest on a clear morning or a pitch black night bring quite contrasting aesthetics. Inwolves deviously treads these moods, creating a unique backdrop that feels both unearthly and hospitable.
